I have the honour to enclose for Your Excellency translation from the Governor General of Canton to the Yeung-Li Yamen dated 18th instant, with reference to the excited state of popular feeling at Canton in consequence of the sanitary measures of the Government in dealing with the plague.
This telegram was handed to be laid before the Ministers of the Yamen at an interview on the 19th instant. Their Excellencies spoke with great moderation and disclaimed the slightest idea of criticising the action of Your Excellency's Government, but they had naturally felt keen anxiety with regard to the state of public feeling in Canton, and still held some account of possible attacks on Mission Stations in outlying districts in the Canton province. They acknowledged the excellent intentions shown in the treatment of the sick, the purification of drains, etc., but in face of the popular prejudices, they begged me to request that Your Excellency...
